My initial reaction for reloading a black powder weapon is that it should take much longer than 1 action/bonus action but, in actual play, nobody wants to dump 2+ actions into reloading. What is the fantasy of a black powder weapon? A brace (or two) of pistols is a great solution to the limited fire rate of firearms. However, you can only fire that weapon once per turn. My take – You can fire as part of your action/bonus action/reaction and reload as an action or bonus action. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make. A character must then reload it using an action or a bonus action (the character’s choice). A limited number of shots can be made with a weapon that has the reload property. ![]() I have consolidated and clarified them here. It’s convoluted and the rules are in different spots in the books. So you can only fire a muzzle loader once during your turn… which means when people start getting multi-attack at lvl 5ish, most people are going to start discarding this wonderfully flavorful weapon in favor of things like bows so there are a few changes we’re going to make below to make them more desirable and more fun! But we’ll get to that in a minute.
